Kobe is a great player but the reason he has won so much is more to due with his supporting Casts then because of some sort of extraordinary talent that surpasses all but Jordan.

i was just commenting on the thread in general, and it just struck me, how some dumb posters just repeat the same nonsense every thread, i just dont understand how they dont get bored of repeating themselves.

The analysis by Kenny Smith at the end was definitely a fresh take on the "closer" debate. I like how he went away from the simple and redundant, "Did he make or miss the shot?" discussion. He actually analyzed the possession to determine whether it was a "good/ smart" play or not.

thats a strange extrapolation, that because kobe is a nicer guy, easier to get along with, he must be a bad leader. i disagree with this. just because you arent liked, doesnt mean that you arent a great leader. in an ideally, people would be motivated best, by positive reinforcement, with encouragement, but unfortunately this isnt the case, imo. a lot of people perform the best when they are forced to focus and work hard through fear.

so some might look at kobe berating a teammate, and think he is killing his confidence, but a lot of guys react well to that kind of treatment. kobe's teammates may not enjoy him, they may hate him, but in a lot of circumstances, i think that that style of leadership may get the very best out of them.

lebron on the other hand, he has always seemed to get along really well with his teammates. he had a great camaraderie with a ton of guys. at the time, this was great, we though that he was getting the best out of his teammates by giving them confidence, but when the playoffs came around, that constant positive reinforcement, i tihnk it made them soft. outside of delonte west (he has always been tough as nails), a lot of his teammates crumbled, and i think lebron's leaderships style is partly to blame.

in all, i think different players need different leadership styles, a guy like pau gasol might react better toa leader giving him a ton of sh*t (kobe), while other guys like chalmers and delonte, guys who are naturaly tough, might react better to positive reinforcement (lebron's style).

so, in summary, i dont think you can say that one or the other is the better leader, across the board.

Watched the vid : this isn't new for me at all, I have witnessed Kobe's career , and the fact is he is a SHOOTING GUARD.
As a traditionalist : he does what he supposed to do - shoot.
His overall game came from his shooting and his athletic abilities.

Shaq was statistically better in 8/9 WCF (Western Conference) series and when you account for intangibles and things outside of pure statistics its clearly 9/9.

Shaq was better in every series leading up to the Finals and then absolutely dominated on the biggest stage while Kobe hung from his nuts.

In terms of the 2010 FMVP that was clearly Gasol.
He dominated at home (where they won 3/4 games) and was dramatically better then Kobe in the 4 games they won and in G7 where not only was he much better then Kobe but had to also carry him in the clutch

Once again, the help had to stop Kobe, and the rotation was late, that is why Shaq was open on that play

This is how 32dayz saw the play:


Shaq was being triple teamed on that last play but they came off him slightly in the last second to try and block Kobe who drove past Pippen. That combined with Shaq diving towards the basket gave him the separation needed to get the easy alley-oop from Kobe

This is how I explained I broke it down for him:

Sheed sagged off of Horry, but he was not double teaming Shaq, he wanted to be close enough incase he needed to rotate. If Sheed doubled teamed Shaq like you claim, then that means that Shaqs defender and Sheed would have both been double teaming him, and Kobe would have knocked down the game winning shot after beating Pippen with the crossover.

Here's how it works, Kobe beat Pippen with the crossover, so now there are three scenarios:

Scenario a: Send the help to stop Kobe, result: Shaq of a wide open alley oop dunk

Scenario b: Send the help to stop Kobe, and rotate to Shaq quickly to deny him the ball, result: Horry is wide open in the left corner for a game winning shot, with no one ten feet around him

Scenario c: Don't send the help to Kobe, but rotate to Shaq, result: Kobe hits the wide open game winning jump shot

Scenario d: this is your scenario, double team Shaq, result: similar to scenario c, Kobe hits the wide open shot

scenario e: another one of your scenarios, double team Shaq, and then send two guys to try and block Kobe, result: either Kobe gets fouled, makes the shot, or give Shaq the alley oop pass, it all depends on how quick the two guys are

I probably taught him more in that thread than he's learned in his years watching NBA games as an armchair expert.

I also challenged him to break down the game for me, and I would do the same (shame, 32dayz could have learned a lot more from me). He refused multiple times.

Other posters chimed in and agreed with me. At the end of the thread, 32dayz said something like, "No one takes you seriously" and then a few posters were like uhm yes we do :roll: :roll:

Shaq was not being double teamed, doing so would leave a shooter wide open. Why would Portland want that in the final minutes of a very close game?

Kobe broke down the defense with his crossover on Pippen,

at this point, Pippen is behind Kobe and thus OUT OF POSITION,

What this means is someone needs to close out in case Kobe goes for a wide open game winner. Shaqs man left him to help, and Sheed rotated (but not quickly enough) to guard Shaq. Because Portland didn't rotate quick enough, Kobe was able to lob the ball to Shaq with great precision for the game winning alley-oop dunk.

Even if Sheed did rotate onto Shaq fast enough, then Kobe would have passed it to the weakside corner for a wide open jumpshot (to Horry)

If Shaqs man stays on Shaq and refuses to close out on Kobe, then Kobe gets a wide open jump shot, which he likely makes

The whole reason why the play worked is because Kobe beat Pippen with the crossover, and thus created the dilemma to begin with

He also had no idea how the play worked, what it means to rotate, and why drawing the help defense created the space Shaq needed to flush a perfectly timed lob from Kobe.
