Kevin Durant is playing at Rucker Park (Harlem, NY) this evening.
I realize most of you are not in NYC, but it's still cool news pretty much anytime the leading scorer in the entire NBA is set to play outside in a park with no admission fee

Crazy stuff. I don't think any modern NBA players have dropped 40 let alone 66. Figures he would be the one to do it though because he's the best scorer in the game and nobody in street ball really has the length to contest his jumper.

I was sort of wondering what was going on when I was just seeing clips of that last triple in other videos. I was like, "why are the rushing the floor after a triple?" Oh, it was his fourth in a minute. Now it's so clear.
Except, was it 56 or 66? It looked like the announcer was saying "Fifty Three!"

Mad balla right there. Of course he's a NBA player and there not even close to that level, but there still athletes and dropping 28 in one quarter is dropping 28 in one quarter no matter how you settle it. He was feeling it during that last barrage of three pointers and you just know if anyone in the NBA could make it rain like that in Rucker Park like he was 2 feet from the basket, it would be Durant.

a lot of the criticisms of this being no defense streetball(like youtube comments) are weak tho. Durant would've made those shots in the NBA since nobody is blocking or really makes him shoot over them from 3 in the NBA either.
it was probably the angle of the camera but i swear those 3's looked longer than NBA 3's too.

At its essence, basketball is a game we likely all begin playing for fun. On a 2038402840298 times smaller scale, I had fun when I did something awesome during a real actual game that mattered with thousands of fans observing. However, it can often be nearly as satisfying to show out in front of fellow community members in an impromptu street setting.
To be real, I wouldn't mind having 20,000 people cheering for me in the NBA conference finals. But I sure as heck wouldn't mind absolutely dominating in a highly respected, intimate street environment either. I say why not celebrate? It's great to be great. Have fun. Give everyone a show. Create a legend at the park. Give hundreds of people a story they'll be telling for years. I loved watching it.
Here's an extended clip covering much more of the game (including another absolute bomb with three defenders circling him a few steps inside half court):

66 is still 66. But watching footage of it? The defenders just watched him. Now make no mistake about it. Its hard to guard Durant as an NBA player. We've seen that. But the effort of the defenders was poor. Kinda felt like a charity game where you dont play too agressive on defense. Durant basically was shooting around like he would in a gym, only the difference here is people were on the court. 66 is still 66 and he excited the crowd in the process. Thats a win.
I've also seen footage of Durant in other parks. He basically just comes down the court and jacks up shots. Not to imply he is a chucker but explaining how he tends to score. Come down, shoot and defend. Come down, shoot and defend. He uses more energy defending than he does scoring. Effortless jumpers time and time again. Now every 6'10 or bigger kid will want to shoot like Durant. :facepalm

A lot of haters in this thread.
I thought that shit was sick. There are plenty of guys who can come down and do some fancy dribbles and dunk against no defense. Durant comes down and just drills 4 NBA 3's in a row; there is no defense for that... that's why he's the leading scorer in the greatest bball league in the World. I'm glad the crowd actually recognizes the greatness of jumpers. A few years ago, during the And-1 craze, the atmosphere was much different. Thankfully that fad died off for the most part.

There is a kid in the 8th grade in NJ. 6'10, and he spends his time jacking up 3's. Why? Kevin Durant is his favorite player and he said he tries to play like him. The crowd recognizes players who can entertain. If Durant played there this Saturday and did nothing but fancy dribbles and finishing at the rim? The fans react the exact same way as when he was drilling jumpers. The atmosphere hasnt changed. Dont let Durant footage fool you.
And there is defense for a guy coming down shooting 3's. But there isnt much defense for a guy 6'10 who has a quick release.

Durant is from the DC area..grew up and honed his skills playing organized ball as well as summer tourneys..
the RUCKER is the most legendary summer street tourney, so being able to shine there means something to Durant.
Doesn't mean anything to you..but figuring that he's already rich...already made asg, already led the league in scoring and made all nba...seeing him get so much joy from sizzling at the Rucker should tell you how important it is to him.

And lose the game in the 4th :lol

I just noticed why Durant has trouble putting on muscle, and or taking physical defense well in this video. The kid has really narrow, almost women-esque shoulders. They aren't broad, and don't look like they could have muscle packed on his frame.

He shot 9/29 from the field and most of his points came from the free-throw line.

The legend is growing.
The game wasn't over.
And for everyone saying "yeah but it's only Rucker, 66 isn't impressive" -- Kobe went to Rucker a few years back, and didn't score anywhere near 66, and had some trouble adjusting to the game. It was rainy that day, and KD plays a lot more streetball so he is adjusted, but it goes to show you that it isn't your average pickup game.

Dude has never even dared play at the Rucker.
Stick to the clown ish.
Rucker is about showing people up w/ fancy moves, yes ... but it's a smaller part of the game than And 1, and it's still REAL basketball. They still are about scoring, playing defense, and more importantly WINNING.
That dude wouldn't be able to do a quarter of the stuff he does with even Rucker Park rules, and especially not when people actually play defense.

Joe Hammond
Joe "The Destroyer" Hammond was a scorer, plain and simple. Joe did most of his scoring at Rucker Park in New York, on one occasion dropping 50 points in one half on Dr. J Julius Irving. He also set a Rucker Park single game scoring record with 82 points.

Straight LIES, right here. SMH ...
Kobe wasn't going NEAR as hard as Durant. He went out to have some fun. And no, he didn't have trouble "adjusting" ... dude played in the Philly streets all the time. He knew how to play streetball.
He was killing people with crossovers, spin moves into jumpers. My college teammate was the recipient of one of the moves too. (guy in the red shorts, when the announcer says "look mommy, I guarded a Kobe ... he SHOT IT IN MY FACE !!!"
:oldlol:
Watch Kobe's expressions, he was clearly being nonchalant.
Kobe clearly wasn't going out looking to jack shots everytime down. It was also a different era at the Rucker in 2003. It was still during the height of the "And 1" craze, and Kobe just went out there and was goofing around.

Iverson went out there and goofed around one year early in his career.
Marbury played there every summer for Fat Joe's squad.
Francis showed out in a big way w/ his handles there one summer.
Jamal Tinsely showed out in a big way w/ his handles there one summer.
Baron Davis played well there.
Jermaine O'Neal was kind of shook when he went there.
Vince Carter went there, played in Gauchos gym though due to rain and KILLED it.
None were out there trying to drop 60+ though.

I agree with what your saying.
I never said Kobe was trying to kill it. My entire point was that it's not just a sloppy pickup game.
And maybe my memory faded, I remember Kobe coming out a little slow and putting up some bricks? Maybe I am wrong, but that's not the point I was making.
And KD does play more streetball than Kobe did.

As a pro? Sure. He plays in Goodman League every summer the past 3 - 4 years.
Personally if I was an NBA player. I would do it maybe once just to be mythic. And I'd only do it at Rucker.
The summer should be for honing your craft behind closed doors, w/ little eyes viewing.
That way the next season you catch people by suprise with new elements to your game.

Yup, exactly. Kobe went once, did his thing, and became a "legend" (NY to this day adores the guy). Funny you mentioned 'honing skills behind closed doors'. Kobe became a totally different player in 2003 (the Rucker game was during the 2002 off-season). Showed us scoring skills we haven't seen since MJ. The difference between 2002 and 2003 Kobe is startling really.
Didn't think he had the ability to hone some of those skills we saw during that streak of nine 40+ point games.

That's the way ninjas do, man ... you have to stay mysterious.
The more they see of you, the more they become comfortable with you ...
The less they fear you. And as a ball player, I'd want to be feared.
I would do it one time @ Rucker, and then never be seen again.
Summer time is for getting BETTER.

tuesday night stats :
Durant's shot was off throughout the night. He connected on only 9-of-29 shots and missed 10-of-12 3-point attempts, but he did make 21-of-23 free throws. He grabbed six rebounds and had seven assists with four turnovers.
He quickly ruled out fatigue as the reason for missing so many shots.

I made a pilgrimage from the United Kingdom to Rucker Park back in 2009. Kevin Durant's explosion is exactly what makes the place so legendary. Has anyone else visited Rucker Park?
