View Full Version : Top 5 dirtiest players of all-time

IMO, the top 5 of all-time. Feel free to mention others and your lists.

1)http://upperdeckblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Laimbeer.jpg

Never seen a player go out of their way to hurt another player as much as Laimbeer did. On top of that, he always had a "What did I do?" attitude. IMO, this is what separates Laimbeer and Malone. Laimbeer never thought he did anything wrong, where as Malone would knock you into next week and calmly walk away.

2)http://www.utahjazz360.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/image_cropped22.jpg

Probably even more reckless with his elbows than Laimbeer. Only difference is aside from his elbows, Malone didn't typically commit the flagrant fouls Laimbeer committed and he also never denied anything he did. Malone's most notable elbow met the face of Isiah Thomas in December 1991.

3)http://www.slamonline.com/online/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/zo.jpg

To me, didn't use his elbows quite as much as Malone did, though Mourning used them quite a bit and was very physical.

4)http://www.faniq.com/images/blog/bowenkick2.jpg

Bowen to me is the Scott Stevens of the NBA. He would extend his leg so shooters would land on it, or he would also simply jump up with his feet in the air and end up kicking the person(an act he did more than once). Like Stevens, Bowen would disguise this acts as natural motions.

Shaq has had his share of incidents, but I rank him a bit lower than the others because a lot of his actions are because of his own size and clumsiness. Shaq was also one ejected for hitting Andrei Kirilenko while coming down after a dunk.

I would give Stockton an honorable mention before I consider KG or Kobe.

I would replace Shaq on your list with this guy:

http://photos.imageevent.com/johansen01/pixelpeepersdelight/nbagonefishin/jerry-sloan.jpg

Chick Hearn used to refer to him as a "hatchet man" and I would have to agree. The only thing he did well was to beat the crap out of the opposition and try to get under their skin.

I will say though, that he is one helluva coach and quite respectable off the court.

Foster does a possible hard foul on Rose and all of the sudden hes on the Top 5 list of dirty players. Almost as extreme as calling Rose Jordan or the MVP with guys like Dwight Howard still active.

Bruce Bowen is the only player I've ever seen who deliberately tries to hurt players to that extent. He's not just an unsportsmanlike NBA player, he's a disgusting human being as well.

I always liked Laimbeer. The difference between him and Malone in my opinion was that Laimbeer did it to help the team and Malone just wanted to hurt you. Whoever impregnates a 13 year old or let`s call it what it is rapes a child must be psycho.Glad Rodman shut his a** down.

I figure Rodman would be a top 5. John Stockton was pretty dirty too. He set at of illegal screens and did some cheap shots to people off the ball. Isiah Thomas was also dirty. I wonder where Bruce Bowen would rank?

Bruce Bowen is the only player I've ever seen who deliberately tries to hurt players to that extent.

to me, this is the difference between being dirty and being a hard nosed defender

sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the difference

back in the 70s every team had a guy who was "an enforcer". his role on the team was to irritate the star of the other team, beat them up and also defend the star of his own team. i saw SO many fights in the nba back then because of this

to me, this is the difference between a thug/dirty player and a hard nosed defender-- his team role. some guys cannot play good defense, so they just go out and beat people up deliberately

some of my all time favorite nba tough guys were: rick mahorn, maurice lucas, frank brickowski, dennis awtry, anthony mason, danny fortson

John Brisker

brisker was not only a thug but borderline psychotic. he joined the armed movement in liberia after his playing days and took his thuggery there

Bruce Bowen can take slots 1-4 by himself...

and Kobe belongs on that list

math lol

I know. But I flunked math. :oldlol:

But since I'm already way past the limit, here are some more:

Swen Nater
Xavier McDaniel
Norm Van Lier
Dennis Awtrey (just for socking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the face in 1974)
Isaiah Thomas
Dave Cowens
Kevin Stacom
Bill Bridges
Ricky Sobers
M.L. Carr
Steve Mix
Marc Iavaroni
Wayne "Tree" Rollins

Of course, not every tough guy/enforcer was necessarily a dirty player. That's why I left Kermit Washington, Jerry Lucas, Willis Reed, Al "Destroyer" Attles, Gus Johnson, pre-Muslim Hakeem Olajuwon, Calvin Murphy, Charles Oakley, Michael Cage, Wendell Ladner, Lonnie Shelton, Bob Lanier, Kevin Willis, Kurt Rambis, and Larry "Mr. Mean" Smith off the list.

Rodman no where near that dirty to be in top 5. He was somehow dirty but rest of was his antics, mind games, wrestling. He wasn't avid user of elbows like those guys. Actually he took more than he gave and refs most of the time allowed that because he was Rodman. He was more into make his opponent's mind out of the game or really make him do some technical or flagrant stuff to out of game.

Guys like Mutombo & Malone much dirtier than Rodman. They were throwing elbows without any sense. Many players got injured because of them.

i remember all these guys (except kevin stacom) and most of them were not dirty players-- awtrey and bridges were dirty; sobers to a degree

i consider the rest just hardnosed defenders
