There are always those players you just hope succeed. In this year's NBA Draft, Nick Young is a player you should be rooting for and cheering on.

When Young was only five years old, his oldest brother Charles Jr. was shot and killed by a member of the Bloods, L.A.'s notorious street gang. He'd been mistaken for a member of a rival gang while exiting his college classroom.

Young's older brother John suffered a breakdown following the murder, and was later committed to a mental institution.

Young then flunked out of Hamilton High when he was a freshman and transfered to Dorsey where he found himself in a class with members of the Bloods gang, who had killed his older brother. Young dropped out of school after he stopped going to his classes.

At Young's third high school, he found his niche. As a senior, he averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds. However, due to NCAA academic needs, Young needed to raise his SAT to 820. Young, a special education student, had three chances to raise his SAT, but he failed on the first two attempts. The third time was the charm and he was able to go to USC.

Nick Young has been through so much that the NBA should be a breeze. I wish Nick Young the best and hope he becomes a great NBA player.

I was about to hate on this guy for being a retard failing out of High School...but I didnt know those were the reasons. :hammerhead: :wtf:

I knew he has had rough life when he was younger. That's why I started watching him since he has started playing in the NBA.
Thanks for sharing this with others. He deserves some respect, not only because of this, but because he is playing great this year. One of better shooters in the league definitely.

Trailer of his upcoming documentary...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPdapGCx71w

The documentary has been out for a while, they've actually aired it on ESPN at least once. He seems to have some kind of learning disability which almost kept him out of high school, and having to go to class with people who were friends with the people who killed his brother and basically destroyed his family didn't help. It's nice how he's grown up to be by all accounts a good guy.

Was Nick's family involved with the bloods/crips or something like that? Or did you never watch the documentary? I actually heard that they aired it before, I dont know why I put upcoming documentary. :hammerhead:

As far as I could tell they weren't, his brother got killed because someone needed to commit a murder to get in. I actually did see it, but it was a year or two ago so I forget all of the details.

Damn I feel bad for picking on his "basketball IQ" now that I know he was special ed. Dude prevailed against some very tough odds and should be applauded. After reading this I'm now a big fan of his.

I really doubt he was special ed as in mentally challenged. I bet he was in remedial classes because he probably went to shit schools as a kid, didn't grow up in a good environment, and had that bad shit scar him. He's probably a normal guy who got lost in the system... Unless someone actually knows what his problem was.

nobody said u have to be smart to make it in the NBA. U just have to be black and tall. There are some exceptions.

Good for him for being able to make it out alive. Some talented dudes aren't able to. Len Bias being a big name that comes to mind. Hopefully he can put his talents together and figure his stuff out.

Honestly it wouldn't surprised me if he were special ed. My mother taught children in that classification for 30+ years so I know a little about it. First off theres different levels of special education ranging from high functioning people who just have difficulty with a subject or 2 (i.e. a learning disability) to those with behaviorial issues and also people that are so low functioning that they can't function by themselves.

Young strikes me as someone whose either LD or that was classified as behaviorial.

It's a very inspirational story. Nick Young is a good basketball player. I hope he make the NBA All Star Game.

PS:

I really hated these murderers. I want to see a Public Execution live on TV. These criminals have no respect for human life.

Good call. The "special ed" label can be at least a little misguided. There's a terribly large range of students that can be referred to in such a fashion. And like you said, and what Professor touched on, it's not always a matter of a student being completely helpless and "dumb" so to speak. I'd venture to say Professor is probably close to the truth in this case.
