View Full Version : Ever wonder where some NBA players live?

When teams like the Knicks were giving their pitch to people like Lebron, location was probably a big factor in their speech. "There's no city like New York". But the fact is that most of the knicks players live in Westchester - not NYC. Amare is living in David Lee's apartment in White Plains. I live in White Plains. There's actually decent night life here - but I doubt any knicks players actually hang out here. I also thought it was odd that Lee (and now Amare) had an "apartment" and not a house in nearby Harrison or Scarsdale like other knicks players/staff. Getting to the garden from here is easy by train+subway, but of course they don't use the train. Assuming they must drive or have a limo or whatever, I've only heard of one knicks player being late for a game due to traffic which was surprising to me in all the years I've been watching. It's even more surprising considering they play even when it's snowing and commuting from westchester to nyc can be difficult. I also always wondered what it's like for players in small markets where there's very little things to do or places to go. Has anyone ever given this much thought?

Taxes play a huge role in the NYC living.

Lee and Stoudamire are guys in their 20's. They're not married and they don't have kids (at least none that they live with). They also have careers that could require moving at a moments notice. Why would it surprise you they have apartments and not houses?

Amare makes 100 million. I'm sure he can afford to get a nice house and sell it if he needs to move. How nice can David Lee's apartment possibly be? There's two "luxury" apartment buildings here. Ritz and trump towers. Both are in the center of the city where all the teenagers hang out - near starbucks and the movie theater. They can't even step out of their apartment without being swarmed by teens. I'm sure they might have a more secluded private apartment somewhere in white plains - it just makes me wonder.

No surprise. When the Sonics were here, I don't think one of them actually lived in Seattle. Well, Radmonivic did live in a hotel downtown:oldlol:
IIRC, Amar'e has a filthy ass penthouse somewhere in "West Village". Is that David Lees place?

It could be just a temporary place. Not everyone buys a mansion as soon as they move.

West village is in NYC. But in the last few knicks games the announcers said multiple times that he's in Lee's apartment in Westchester.

Ehh Amar'e is rich as hell and just signed for $100M. If he is staying in Lee's old spot, it's probably temporary. That would be my guess anyway.

This is supposedly the apartment Lebron was going to get in NY. It's at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.

If you are single why would you want to buy a house in a city where you might not even spend your summer. Between traveling during the season and not living there in the winter. Thats a lot of up keep just for a place to sleep for 41 games a year. I know a lot of them will live in a hotel just because they aren't there that often.
Apartments offer an easier lifestyle for someone who doesn't live full time in one city.

Someone I know met an ex-nba player that was now in pharmaceuticals. He said his whole time in the NBA he lived out of hotels. Basically didn't see the need to settle down when he was living the life and didn't have any family around.

When Shaq played in Cleveland, he rented a house in a suburban neighborhood in Richfield. I remember watching the news and they interviewed his neighbors.

House over apartment in NYC but if you are a NBA player, or any athlete, it's better to rent.

I heard that Kobe gets driven to a local hotel by Staples and chills there before the game to avoid traffic. If he decides not to go early, he has a helicopter with a hired pilot flying him to the games.
Pretty sick because he gets to avoid traffic and comes in as he pleases.

That would be great for chemistry building between the players.

From what I can remember...
I think Rose and Rondo have shown their houses for TV shows. Of course not the locations, and it would be interesting to know how close are they from their stadium.
Shawn Marion used to live in an apartment when he played in Phoenix -in his prime-, and he actively tried to have a good relationship with his neighbors (or so the article said).
I also remember reading Spurs' organization was very active in regards to accommodating any player that came to play for them, and I guess most teams have some sort of agreement with real state companies, so they can get that sorted out. After all, any person -not just MAX money players- would take that into consideration when signing a deal.
My guess is that most NBA players with at least an average salary buy a house near their families or the cities they are used to, have their families living there (if any), and just go there whenever they have 2-3 days or longer off. Other than that, I suppose they live in rented apartments or hotels.
Would be interesting to get that insight of the "average" NBA player lifestyle.

Jordans digs in Illinois was unreal.
I remember when Kobe was un happy with the Lakers and was feelin' it going to the Bulls... Jordan's house was available .. but
Years ago Inside the NBA did a show on Stackhouse in Detroit ... his house seemed like rooms the length of football fields ..
I wonder if T-Mac still owns the house in Tx ??

Hmm, i could have sworn Marion lived in a house near camelback mountain when he was playign in Phoenix..but maybe that was Penny Hardaway.

he lives in a house that overlooks the sacramento river, not too far from arco.
when ron artest played for the kinds, he lived in loomis, a small town about 25 minutes away, and he probably the only black guy there :lol

as far as the kings, most of the players probably live in teh same area as evans (natomas) to stay close to arco

It would be inconvenient as heck to try and navigate through the morning peak hour Manhattan traffic to go from somewhere like Tribeca or the West Village to the Westchester Practice Facility. Besides much of the towns in Westchester County are nice, high income areas
As for Amare, I could see him rent D.Lee's Westchester apartment for convenience purposess (to go to practice) while staying in his West Village apartment on off days to live the much desired "NYC lifestyle" I'm sure he could afford it anyway =)
Doesn't Kobe live in Newport Beach? Isn't that in Orange County? That's a LONG drive, especially with the traffic james on LA Freeways. I guess that's why he gets to Staples by helicopter:lol Also considering, how we hear insane stories of Kobe's work ethic and how he gets to practice at 5am or whatever, he must barely get any sleep because I don't think the Lakers Practice Facility is near Newport Beach either..
Shaq though I heard lived in Beverly Hills during his Laker days.

Yes, Kobe does live in Newport Beach and he takes a helicopter to practice and games (not kidding). He's been doing that the past few years.

Probably Palmer Woods. That's the only really nice neighborhood I can think of.

This house is between 7 and 8 Mile in Detroit. :oldlol:
But realistically, I can't imagine any players living in the actual city because of the fact that it's Detroit, and it's not close to the Palace or anything. I wouldn't wanna live in Detroit and have to drive 45 minutes to work every day, when I could live in much nicer places 5 minutes away from work. :confusedshrug:

I think most players who play for the Pistons live in Troy.
homes in detroit and surrounding area are sooooo cheap. all max contracts are the same, but you get way more bang for your buck when buying a home in those places. $2million is enough to get a big ass mansion on a private lot and the works if you're in the midwest or something, but in new york or sf, you ain't getting anything like that for same cost. you might get a bigger than average house, but you're probably gonna be very close to your neighbors because you don't got your own lot or space for pool or tennis court, etc. $2m home would still be "above-average" but it definitely won' be luxury.
no pun intended

Last time, I checked, Nike told me that LeBron and Kobe shared a house together. They have a neighbor named Lil Dez or something.

I'm also thinking Bloomfield Hills plays a role with Detroit Piston players, ditto the Red Wings. My bro gets Wings in his restaurant in Novi all the time and in one case, Rick Mahorn.
As a note to people not in the know and from the Detroit area, the suburbs surrounding the city are actually very, very nice. It is a situation where once a family was wealthy enough, they moved up out of Detroit itself, creating a sort of donut effect where the D emptied out and the surrounding areas became pretty affluent.
And my little contribution, one of my former players was apparently hanging out at Chicago Bulls forward James Johnson's house a month ago. From his account it looked "like a freaking castle". So, take that for what it's worth.

Back in his playing days, Michael Curry lived in my neighborhood right down the street.
I was friends with a his son who went onto play for Michigan State Football, and Curry even made us all lunch once.
Ben Wallace also lived right down the road in a much more expensive house.

Detroit has some of the wealthiest per capita neighborhoods in the world in the metro area.
The auto industry has traditionally created a whole **** ton of wealth for the people at the top. There's no shortage of posh living quarters around Detroit. It just looks that way because so much of Detroit proper is like a third world slum.
