View Full Version : Who has the single most devastating move in Basketball?

tgan3
09-25-2010, 10:49 PM
As applies to many things in life, it is not the move that matters, but the person behind the moves. A crossover by a beginner is utterly useless if he loses the ball, but in the hands of a master (Hardaway, Iverson) it becomes a devastating weapon.

That said, who has the single most devastating move in the game?

Iverson's crossover?
MJ's fadeaway?
Kareem's skyhook?
Magic's no look passes?
Shaq's drop step?
Others?

He single-handedly devestated the Cavs franchise and Cleveland's economy in a single move.

Kevin McHale's post moves, especially the up and under.
Tim Hardaway's crossover.
Tim Duncan' turnaround bank shot.
Bird's shot.
Shaq's brutality.
Dream Shake.
Sky Hook.

I find that shot to be even greater in difficulty than say a turnaround J by MJ or Kobe. The shooter has no idea where the ball is and he never really squares up.

What a surprise, two moves by low-post players. =/

To me it's gotta be MJ's fadeaway, or MJ's crossover fade. (shades of 1998 Utah)

It's easier if you shoot it from the middle of the floor (ie. in front of the rim) because you have a good sense of where the rim is (and if you overshoot it, you have the backboard), but really tough on the baseline or on angles. I don't think anyone can realize the full value of the shot until you practice the move and start posting up bigger/taller guys who can't do anything about it (and then if you get a turnaround to counter the move, it's even more difficult).

no pun intended

Kareem's sky hook happened in slow motion yet all you could do is watch it as you knew it was going in.

jstern
09-26-2010, 12:36 AM
That sky hook looks devastating, unguarded. As well as Shaq in his prime. They probably have the edge, since they work closer to the rim.

But for a perimeter player I would have to go with Jordan's fade away. There was nothing anyone could do about it.

Probably Kareem's hook and then second Kobe's fadeaway just because its so disheartening. When Kobe starts hitting those insane shots that no one else ever makes (mostly because they aren't stupid enough to try) it just can't be fun to guard him.

It's not really a devastating move physically but some of the shots Kobe hits can be devastating to a team's psyche, so he's gotta up there with shaqs elbow, iversons cross and of course the sky hook of kareem

More often than not, KAJ was able to get the shot off against him and any other defender. Darryl Dawkins has noted how he used to have nightmares of the sky hook. :lol When he added the turn around jumper and eventually could hook with either hand from virtually any angle, he was perhaps the most complete offensive big man we have seen. Even as an old man he could still get the better of younger legendary big men. Note him taking the young Patrick Ewing to school at the 0:27 mark below.

Perhaps, but considering it his Duncan's "signature shot" and its one of the first things people think of when consider; you'd hope he didn't use it to the degree that people know him for it and took closer and straightforward shots which are clearly better than his average FG% to make up for the lower FG% shots such as his bank shot.

Typically most fans would say a cross over , stud/step , behind the back ,
shake and bake , turn around --

But when I was thinking what really makes a move MJ would immediately say what the defender gives you , or a slight hesitation, to promote the defender from going the right way.
BUT down in the post you have traffic.
That means more defenders as well as spacing :

I agree Mchale might of had the best moves , because he used his feet as a weapon to gain advantage over his opponents.
Hard to believe but not gifted with speed or true athleticism , but he was well taught and a great student of the game of low post play.
