So Lebron James and Dwayne Wade are better than Kobe? Of course they are and its not even close. The only thing Kobe has over the two is he has the better team and coach. As you seen in the NBA Finals, Kobe to me wasnt even the best Laker on the floor. It was Pau Gasol! No Joke! Kobe played horrible real talks bro.

http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2008/1230/nba_g_james_wade_576.jpg
Hey didnt I have a thread saying Kobe will play horrible agaisnt the Boston Celtics? Yes I did guess I was right. To me if Lebron James or Dwayne Wade had the same squad as Kobe Bryant they would have blew out their competetion bro! Dwayne Wade is a monsta but very underrated when the league talks about the best. Dont no why? Dwayne Wade had the best numbers out of all the three against Boston Celtics dude shot over 50fg% wow:applause:  !!

http://nbasoup.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/lebron-james-3.JPG
Lebron James on the other hand is still the man. He gets critize too much when his team lose. Remember last year vs Orlando. ESPN was going at Lebron James for losing against the Magic what the HECK? Dude average like 36ppg 8rpg 8apg!!....O YEAH + 50FG% DAMN!! At game 6 against Boston Celtics people were saying how Lebron James had the most empty stats ever in Proffesinoal Sports History!! WTF? Look at Kobe Bryant numbers Game 7 6 for 24:roll: WTF IS THAT EVEN POSSILBE Dude got rebounds. So? Lebron got more!

Kobe almost single handly lost his team the game when he took that that stupid deep 3 WTF IS THAT! If that is not chucking I dont no what is! Thank God he got Pau who saved his ass wit that Rebound. Kobe is WACK REAL TALKS BRO!

So as you can see Kobe Bryant isnt even in the Top Ten Disscussion. Cuz if he is u have to add these TWO STUDS Lebron James and Dwayne Wade cuz they are much better than Kobe.

I seen everything bout how Kobe Legacy!!! WTF WTF!! Kobe is talking shit bout Shaq!! WTF SHAQ>>>>>(100000000MORE)KoBe. How is Kobe even discuss in the ****ing top ten all time. How is he the best laker Magic? Huhh? Ever heard of Kareem.

Bring on the Laker/Kobe homers cuz i am really mad. That DUDE IS OVERRATED THE REFS AND STERN WERE ON YOUR SIDE!!!

Oh and Kobe gets the ball with like 5+ seconds left on the shot clock.

Lebron has the ball in his hands for lke 20 seconds, every posession...
he's their point guard and a stat padder.

That's his down fall...he carries a team and hogs the ball, all year and
when they hit playoffs and good defensive teams, who play them consecutive times...LBJ gets neutralzed in a sense...and then he deviates to his teammates who have no confidence what so ever at this point. no rhythym.

Lebron is great though, don't get me wrong...
but he's far from perfect, just like Kobe.

The problem with Lebron is just that he cant afford to play bad in the playoffs against a good team. If he plays bad Cavs lose it is as simple as that. I cant remember one game in the playoffs when Lebron played bad and his teammates saved his ass and won the game against a good team and not some first round team.

They have better stats than Kobe, but consider Kobe has only lost 1 series thus far with HCA while Wade has played 1/4 of the amount of series with HCA and lost just as many and Lebron has already lost 2.

Kobe is obviously better if you're talking about career wise but the OP isnt talking career wise. it's 2010 and LeBron+Wade > Kobe.

Everybody has a different opinion. Mike won MVP in 1988 but Magic still consider better until 1991. Dirk has one MVP under his belt, at least people are not saying Dirk is better than Kobe. Anyway Kobe > LeBron and Wade. Sorry.

anyone who says kobe is better than either just wants him to be soo bad that they thing it is actually true.

he has the better career, but in all fairness neither especially lebron has had near the talent of the lakers now or in the threepeat. if you want to argue with that than it is just ridiculous cause it isnt even close.

lebron actually gets out the first round with a crappy team unlike kobe, heck he even made it the finals with a crappy team.

I'm sorry comparing Kobe losing in the first round to Lebron getting past round one and the finals is idiotic. It was like night and day the teams they faced back then.

If you think Lebron is better fine but don't use those stupid ass reasons why he is better by bringing up playoff success. Whats impressive by winning 60+ wins and HCA throughout the playoffs and still not making the finals?

What? Lebron was terrible in that series par for like two games. He shot what 25% through the first 4 games of that series? his team-mates kept him in that series.

Lebron is a great player and a great stats player there is no ways around that but bringing up Lebron getting past garbage teams like Wizards year after year makes him getting past round one and making the finals impressive? I'[m sorry it doesn't...Lebron played some of the worse teams he could face a few years back. The east is stronger now but back then it is weak as hell.

Yeah it was no doubt, the fact they took Boston to 7 while Lebron playing like crap was a shock to me. I not saying Lebron had a great cast every year he made the playoffs but the teams he faced and beat were poor. Even the Pistons in 07 were past their prime in the conference finals HOWEVER the performance Lebron put in game 5 was unreal and I had so much respect for him after that game.

I really think Lebron needs to go Cleveland if he ever wants to make the finals again or win titles. I just don't see anything but 2nd round and ECF dissapointments otherwise. Not unless Gilbert brings a legit big and with their lack of cap space it won't happen.

I honestly don't get why the only fans that can't be objective about player rankings for the most part are Laker fans and Cleveland fans.

I'm a Heat fan, and I can admit that Bron is the best player in the league, as much as I dislike him. Even though I prefer watching Wade and Kobe over Bron, there is no doubt in my mind he's better.

^^ because people focus too much on championships and not enough on context or ability.

kobe is a great, great player. is he better than lebron or dwyane? definitely not. you can't tell me that the lakers would not have won with either of those players.

people are routinely rating kobe higher than hakeem, duncan, etc at this point. both of those players (peak) are unequivocally better two way players than kobe. i realise it's difficult to compare big men and perimeter players, but defensively it really isn't close. kobe talent-wise is one of the best perimeter defenders i've ever seen, but he is so inconsistent it's not funny. even more than bron IMO. wade is better defensively than both of them.

Very late to the party here...

There are many ingredients, if you will, that go into being a good basketball player. I once read Jerry West say something to the effect that there's a reason players usually peak around age 26 and start falling off around age 30... and it's because effectiveness in basketball revolves around

1. Athleticism - This is more or less "genetic lottery" stuff - you can develop it somewhat, and you can lose it early by being lazy and not keeping your body in shape - but it's also something that starts to fade due to wear and tear on the body once you hit about age 30 (and for those of you on the board that are younger than 30, remember you read it here first). Examples: LeBron's size and grace (or a young Shaq), Michael Jordan or James Worthy's ridiculously large hands for their size (allowing them to do much more with a basketball than most other players at their position).

2. Skills - By this I mean the set of "moves" and "tricks" and other such things you have to practice to acquire (nobody wakes up one morning as the best ballhandler or best three-point shooter in the world or possessed of Kevin McHale or Olajuwon's post moves; you have to practice these). To some degree, your size and athleticism limits the number of moves you have at your disposal (a 7-5 center won't have the crossover speed of a 5-10 guard just because the ball has much farther to travel from his hand to the floor and back and he has much more inertia to stop).

3. Understanding - This kind of goes hand-in-hand with skills, but this is the "mental" aspect of the game - anticipating the way a play is going to develop, being aware of time, circumstance, and situation (this type of understanding plus the "skill" of jump-shooting is usually the way that 45-year-old dude manages to keep up - at least in the halfcourt - most of the time in a pickup game). Best example I've ever seen of this - and one of the simplest - was John Stockton trapped on his own baseline after a defensive rebound and chucking a no-look lob pass to a wide-open teammate on the other end of the court... after the game, he said, "well, there were two guys on me, and the three teammates I saw on my side of half-court each had a man on them - that accounted for all five defenders and since I had to have one more teammate, I knew he had to be on the other side of the halfcourt line, so I just threw the ball where he had to be." All this required was the ability to count to five, but also the presence of mind to do so. These sorts of things - along with playing angles and knowing how to space the floor properly, the timing on when to cut to the basket as a double-team goes to the ball, and so forth, all fall under "understanding" the game, and picking this up takes time (even Magic and Bird - the masters of anticipation - improved in this way as they got older).

Before age 26 or so, players have all the athletic gifts they are going to get, but are still developing the skills and haven't picked up much of the understanding yet.

Between ages 26 and 30 or so, players still have their athletic gifts, and have developed most of the skills and gained a considerable understanding. This is why they're at their peak - they have almost everything.

After age 30, guys start relying on skill and especially understanding (which keeps on expanding through their careers) until the deterioration of their athletic gifts is so great that not even their skill and understanding can let them keep up with the young, athletic players (the mind is writing checks the body can no longer cash - you need look no further than MJ with the Wizards to understand how this works; he still had the moves, but his body didn't jump as high and didn't move as quickly when he executed them, which meant younger, more athletic guys could recover in time to foil him - and while he was able to be *effective*, he was no longer *dominant*).

All of this is a roundabout way of framing the way I'm going to reply to the original poster as follows:

LeBron James has physical gifts that are absolutely unrivalled, and he is FAR ahead of Kobe (or anyone else) in terms of physical gifts; however, he is still developing some of his skills (three-point shooting finally arrived this season, and he still needs to work on a low-post and mid-range game) and his understanding, while ahead of the curve, has been hurt somewhat relative to some other players from subpar coaches (it's the truth, sorry).

Dwyane Wade has great physical gifts - not as great as LeBron - and may be a bit more skilled than LeBron is (excellent dribbler, has a lot of mid-range stuff, but like LeBron, does not have a low-post game and could use some work on his off-ball movement and post defense), and may be a bit ahead of LeBron in understanding due to having better coaches (I rank Stan Van Gundy and Pat Riley ahead of Mike Brown, sorry).

Kobe Bryant's physical gifts are considerably diminished (even he has said, "I'm not going up and trying to windmill over three guys any more" - on the flip side, he works very hard at keeping himself in shape, unlike, say, Shaq, so the decline in athleticism we're seeing is due to age and "wear and tear" and not due to getting lazy, so you can't fault him for losing it as he is getting older) but he has worked relentlessly to become possibly the most skilled player in the game (he worked with Olajuwon to develop a post game, he has the mid-range game, he's an excellent ballhandler, etc.), and MOST of the time, he exhibits better understanding of the game than LeBron or Wade (I say "most" of the time because he has selfish lapses - which are coming with less frequency as he gets older - and when he plays selfish he plays stupid).

There are many (and I am one of them) that think that Kobe's superb skills and good understanding still allow him to be more effective on the court (when he's not being selfish/stupid) - even with his athleticism diminished a bit from its peak 3-4 years ago - than LeBron and Wade can be with their superior athleticism.

If you were to ask me, I would say LeBron is the best athlete, and it's not even close; Wade is the next-best athlete, and Kobe is third (though at his peak, Kobe was as athletic as Wade, possibly more so). Kobe is the most skilled of the three, probably followed by Wade, then LeBron (but again, it's close) and they're all pretty close in understanding of the game, but I give Kobe the edge any time he's not playing selfish/stupid (if he is, edge to Wade).

Of course, Kobe's athleticism is going to keep declining, while Wade and LeBron will be adding skill and understanding to their games for a few more years before their athleticism starts to go. Right now, they're all bunched up, and, frankly, if I was building a team to compete for a title next week, I'd probably pick Kobe (but only by a hair). If I was building a team for the next two or more seasons, it would be LeBron (because if he develops the skills and understanding, his athletic ability puts his ceiling higher than Wade), but if LeBron gets too full of his own press clippings and doesn't put in the work required to add more skills and understanding, Wade will ultimately be the better player of the two.

So, OP (and everyone else), there you go. LeBron definitely has the highest ceiling of the three, and Kobe will get worse, not better, as time goes on... but in terms of what skills and understanding of the game they bring to the table allow them to get out of their athleticism right this second - not what they COULD bring to the table, but what they DO - you have a darn good argument for any one of the three, and picking Kobe with the argument that "his skills right now can still overcome the athletic gulf between the players" is a legitimate choice if you value skill over pure athleticism - which, frankly, I think the playoffs do because the game slows down and bodies tend to pack the paint more, which makes it tougher for sheer athleticism to win out - the old "age and treachery beats youth and ability" theme (though as LeBron and Wade narrow the skill gap and age widens the athletic gap on Kobe, they're both going to become clearly better than Kobe, even if it's muddy now).

Finally, a quick note on "All Time Greats" - it's a combination of "Peak Play" and "Longevity" that get you into the discussion - Bill Walton was one of the best and most dominant centers ever at his peak. Problem is, foot problems limited that peak to about 2 seasons total, which is why he's never mentioned with Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Shaq, etc., all of whom were dominating for a decade or more. It's also why Karl Malone is ranked high on most PF lists; not that he was necessarily the most dominant PF ever (I would suggest that Charles Barkley when Karl was young, Chris Webber when Karl was in the middle of his career, and Tim Duncan later in Karl's career were all more dominant at the position than Karl was - but only Duncan has been so much more successful that we overlook the length of time for which Malone was an effective player).

why do people assume lebron and wade will add more skills? Kobe already had most of his current skills by age 25. Even his post up game was decent at that age. He was 24 or so when he went on that 9 game 40 point streak.

I don't think Wade's and Lebron's outside game will magically get better as they age. I am pretty sure they already put effort into improving it and it is not even close to a 24 year old Bryant.

They are beasts at driving to the basket so it will be interesting what happens once their bodies start breaking down.

people are actiing like wade and lebron aren't skilled.

lebron has great handling skills, his shooting has improved every season he's been in the league (his midrange jumper is vastly better than it was), he's improved his three ball and ball handling, and even added a little bit of a post game (obviously nowhere near kobe's, but it's a start). wade is as good a ball handler as kobe, his midrange is money, and he's better at attacking and finishing around the hoop, despite the fact that he's only a marginally better athlete than young kobe.

people remark that kobe is such a skilled player, that he is a far better shooter, better post game etc etc he is CONSIDERABLY less efficient than both bron and wade, and has shot worse from three than lebron for a couple of seasons now (although it's pretty marginal). if he is that much more skilled, it is all but nullified by his IQ. he can be a clever player at times, but he still takes some of the worst shots i have seen any of the three take.

@ chazzy - as for consistency argument, you certainly cannot hold that against either duncan or hakeem, both of whom have been remarkably consistent in their careers.

kobe has been blessed with decent to superb squads his WHOLE career. the only time his team has lacked was the season where the lakers started kwame etc and they were knocked out by phoenix first round (THE GAME WHERE KOBE QUIT PLAYING). that team WAS horrible, but he underperformed the season before with butler and odom coming off decent seasons at miami (missed the playoffs).

most reasonable poster would say

most gifted player - Lebron
most skilled player - kobe
kind of inbetween skilled and gifted - wade

The only thing Bron is better than Kobe is athleticism. The only thing wade is better than Kobe is using screens to get himself open. :lol

It's exactly posts like this that makes me believe most Kobe fans feel that Bron, and even Wade are better though want to continue to spout the same nonsense in order to help themselves and others believe it if they say it enough times.

You don't want to know how some of the better Kobe and Bron fans feel then... lol

Look this punk does even want to discuss. Tell me how Kobe is better than Lebron James huh? How is he better than Dwayne Wade?

Footwork, ALL AROUND offensive game (post up, midrange, and three point shot), coming through when his team needs him most (despite his 6-24 game 7 he was a beast on the boards and got to the line A LOT... he deserved the Finals MVP), defense, continuing to put up strong numbers with an injured finger (he had as many good games with it as he did bad), and the main one, winning.

LeBron and Wade may be more athletic, drive to the basket more (both of which Kobe was excellent at a few years ago), and are more efficient (though you can make the argument that LeBron cares TOO MUCH about his stats as Kobe's willing to shoot low percentages if it means his team gets the win), but Kobe's the most complete player out of the three.

LOL, what a pile of crap...tell me how does Kobe shooting 6-24 help his team chances and Lebron shooting over 50 % don't? Didn't some morons call Bron's Game 6 tripple double vs Boston "empty" stats? And what is that "willing his team to a win" crap is all about? Wade and Bron willed their piss poor squads plenty of times before with CONSIDERABLY less help than Mr. Bryant has had...Lebron is good enough to guarantee his team 60+ seaons back to back - no one is gonna convince me that Cavs didn't overachieve BIG time in regular season. Just because Lebron doesn't have a luxury of proven HOF coach and clutch veteran players, he isn't less of a player one bit. Get real here and watch some basketball:hammerhead:

I think Lebron is the best overall player but Kobe vs Wade?

Respect man, at least one laker fan with a common sense.

Interesting how other lakers fans talk about Lebron just being athletic freak and avoid to mention his passing ability which I think puts him over Kobe. Imagine his assists if he would have a big man like Gasol, wow.

you know how i knoe kobe's the best, there are no threads dedicated to discrediting wade and lebron, why? because there is no need. The same way no one makes a thread talking shit about David West, they're not on kobe's level and not sucessful enough for true haters

Well best player does not just go with athletic ability and passing.

His mental toughness has been called out for the last two years.
Overall basketball talent Lebron is up there, but his potential and what he has done with it is still a question mark.

post moves, Jumper, footwork. his basics are not there, if they were he'd be no1.

Also dont take stats for all it is. Kobe, lebron , wade dont play the same system. Look at MJ stats in the triangle. kobe's not off by much.

Take off his 1st two years in the league coming off the bench and you have MJ numbers.

But all that aside i could not care less, his career is not over and his trip to the finals is just a new era. While he has 4 more years in the nba he may just go 2/4 with 7 rings and 4 MVP's and top 3 all time

He's over shaq, duncan and bird, possibly tied with magic. But one more and that would put him below MJ and he will go down top 3 player ever.

Maybe you should listen to espn and hollinger and everyone who tossed him aside when the playoffs began and the injuries he's played thru to win a title.

Its not easy and to hate is just sad.

Onceinadecade should be worried about beasley going mental instead of hating on kobe.
