View Full Version : Nuggets playoff game and WWE wrestling book same date in Denver

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are scheduled to be at the Pepsi Center in Denver next Monday night.

Problem is, so are John Cena and a bunch of wrestlers — and they called it first.

World Wrestling Entertainment said it is booked at the arena for an episode of Monday Night Raw, the same night the Nuggets are slated to host the Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.

WWE chairman Vince McMahon told The Associated Press he doesn't believe there was "any malice, just ineptness," on the part of Kroenke Sports, which owns the team and the building, but can't tolerate the company "just simply throwing us out on our ear."

Without a quick resolution, McMahon plans to send his trucks to Denver.

"That's what we intend to do," he said. "We're going to show up."

WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman said the organization secured the Pepsi Center last Aug. 15 and has already sold more than 10,000 tickets for the event. He says the organization expects a sellout, with tickets ranging from $20 to $70.

This is the type of attention Vince loves and wants for the WWE.

It would be classic if the Nuggets were up 3-0 in the series and couldn't play because of the event.

One of them had to be first. Article said they booked it last august. Why would they lie about something so easy to verify? Im not even sure the NBA has its schedules for the next year released in august. If the arena had a contract that let the NBA have the arena no matter what on that day they wouldnt be selling tickets for the WWF on the same day.

I figure they just didnt expect to need the arena by this time.

They did the semi finals in the afternoon on Sundays, and Memorial Day is an extended weekend (used to do one game of the finals in the afternoon too). It's not ideal but this isn't the WWE's fault so this may be the only solution if they can set up the WWE stuff within 5-6 hours after the game.

The Penguins/Capitals had a similar conflict with a concert and they had to play back to back games.

rezznor
05-19-2009, 05:42 PM
The best storyline of the NBA playoffs this week has nothing to do with the impending battles between Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony or Dwight Howard and LeBron James.

It centers on the battle for Denver's Pepsi Center on Memorial Day between World Wrestling Entertainment Chairman Vince McMahon and Stan Kroenke, who owns the Denver Nuggets and the team's home arena.

Kroenke Sports Enterprises had originally booked the Pepsi Center on Monday for WWE Monday Night Raw, a weekly pro wrestling show aired live to a worldwide audience on cable television, but a conflict arose when the NBA scheduled Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals between the Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers at the arena on the same day and time.

Even though the WWE secured the Pepsi Center last Aug. 15, confirmed the date in March and signed a contract on April 15, according to WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman, the Nuggets and Lakers will play Game 4 of their series Monday night at the arena, according to Paul Andrews, executive vice president of Kroenke Sports Enterprises.

If this were an episode of Raw, McMahon might take on Kroenke in a steel cage with the Pepsi Center on the line. As it is, the WWE chairman is simply trying to figure out how he will fulfill his obligation to the over 10,000 fans that have already purchased rickets for the show (tickets for the event, which is expected to be a sellout, were still being sold online as of Tuesday afternoon) and to the USA Network, which is expecting two hours of live programming on Monday night.

"I'm up the creek and I don't have a paddle, either. I really don't know what to do," said McMahon. "We can't reschedule the event."

A similar scheduling conflict arose two weeks ago during the Stanley Cup Playoffs when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals were forced to play Games 4 and 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on back-to-back nights in different cities because Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena had booked a Yanni concert the same night that the Penguins were to have a home game.

Unfortunately for McMahon, the NBA and the Pepsi Center aren't giving the WWE the Yanni treatment.

"Even though the Denver Nuggets had a strong team this year and were projected to make the playoffs," said McMahon. "Obviously Nuggets and Pepsi Center owner Stan Kroenke did not have enough faith in his own team to hold the May 25 date for a potential playoff game."

McMahon, who is looking to resolve the situation one way or another by Thursday, is especially upset because he believes Kroenke didn't present the scheduling conflict to the NBA before the schedules were released Sunday (simply starting the series Wednesday instead of Tuesday would have prevented this double booking) and because the arena signed off on the date on April 15, the last day of the regular season, when the Nuggets knew they were a No. 2 seed in the West and were likely going to still be playing in May.

The embarrassing predicament has caused all parties involved, except for the WWE, which seems to thrive in controversial situations, to remain tightlipped. Calls to Kroenke Sports Enterprises and the NBA were met with no comments and e-mailed statements.

"The Nuggets and the WWE understand that the date of Game 4 of the Western Conference finals cannot be changed," NBA senior vice president Mike Bass said in a statement. "We are confident that the Pepsi Center and the WWE will resolve their scheduling conflict."

Meanwhile Andrews issued a statement saying: "We are working with the WWE to resolve the situation amicably."

With little time and fewer options to resolve the not-so-amicable situation before Monday night, McMahon has already started to send his production trucks to Denver as scheduled. He says he still plans on having a show, even if that means setting up a ring in the parking lot outside of Pepsi Center.

"We're going to show up," said McMahon. "Our trucks are rolling."

Would have been so easy for the NBA to have switched the WCF-ECF dates if Kroenke had pointed out the conflict. I'm no fan of the WWE but they have the right to be there and shouldn't back down.

the only way WWE wont be there monday is if they pay Vince, and I don't think he has any intention to take their money(I hope not) lol.

And whatever choice he makes the fact still remains that the nuggets owner is a dumbass

one thing i could def. see happening for real is the WWE setting up the ring in the parking lot and drawing all the attention away from the game goin on inside

parking?

as much as we think the denv/la game is much more important as bball fans, WWE has already booked the arena and sold tickets and plans to make a lot of $$ there.....

looks like the Nuggets are out of luck unless they can negotiate with the WWE which should be interesting to say the least..

The NBA can't win this fight. The playoff game will just be pushed back, it realy isn't that big of a deal compared to what it could be. If the NBA blows this thing up I beleive it will look very bad on the league.

InfiniteBaskets

Yeah we don't know what the contract stated for sure, but if there's no loophole for the Nuggets owner to crawl out of, then the WWE has the right to be there. Contracts are supposed to be a way of guaranteeing things.

Worst case scenario is if the WWE shows up with everything and starts to set up shop inside the Nuggets' arena. Then if the owner has the arena security or whatever kick them out, the WWE has a right to sue for a very large amount of money.

I am no fan of any sort of wrestling but it would be very entertaining to see Vince McMahon set up in the parking lot or something and bad mouth the NBA.

Where READING happens...

Paul Andrews, executive vice president of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, issued a statement Monday night a bit more understated than McMahon. "We are working with the WWE to resolve the situation amicably," he said.

The NBA, which sets the playoff schedule, is leaving it to the Nuggets and the WWE to work out the dispute.

Its not about what people want to watch. The WWE booked the arena with a contract in advance.

People feel to realize that the NBA has a contract with the Pepsi arena as well. They submitted a list of all booked dates to the arena to the NBA before the playoff schedule was made, and this date was picked. Its not as simple as the NBA just choosing to reschedule the game, because they have exclusive contracts with TNT to broadcast Eastern Conference games and ESPN to broadcast Western Conference games. For them to force not only the arena to be ready earlier, but to also have the network manipulate their broadcasting would cost the Pepsi Center millions.

Their making the decision to breach their contract with the WWE because they believe it to be a better business decision to not live up to this obligation and get sued by them, than to try to accomodate them and be at the mercy of ESPN to try to get the Lakers-Nuggz game broadcasted and risk an even larger lawsuit.

Hey Hush Puppy. Let me break it down for you kid.

Western Conference Finals (something Denver hasnt been in for how long?) is 1 step closer to the big stage which is the NBA Finals. You have the visiting L.A Lakers in town vs your Denver Nuggets. The stars of the game that most casual fans will look at are Kobe and Melo.

Who in Denver will not care to see Kobe vs Melo over a WWE event?

I can almost guarantee you they will. WWE can sue now for an anticipatory repudiation or they can wait for the date when the event was supposed to transpire and then sue for a total breach. By showing that they were prepared to broadcast their the WWE is making sure they have damages that they are hoping to re-gain in the lawsuit.
