NBA Finals Notes
NBA Playoffs | June 12, 2005
The San Antonio Spurs lead the Detroit Pistons 1-0 in the best-of-seven 2005 NBA Finals. These are notes coming into Game 2:
SPURS UP, PISTONS DOWN: Spurs are now 3-0 all-time in Game 1 of The Finals … They won in 1999 over Knicks, 89-77 at the Alamodome, and in 2003 over Nets, 101-89 at SBC Center. The Spurs won both series … The Pistons are now 4-1 all-time in Game 1 of The Finals during the Detroit era, with three wins over the Lakers and one over the Blazers prior to tonight’s loss … They were also 0-2 in Finals Game 1s during their tenure in Fort Wayne.
MUST WIN … ALMOST: The Pistons are now faced with a virtual must-win in Game 2. Only two of 26 teams have ever rebounded from an 0-2 deficit to win The Finals (7.7%). The two teams were the Boston Celtics in 1969 and the Portland Trailblazers in 1977.
SEEING DOUBLE: Tim Duncan who had 24 points and 17 rebounds, had a double-double at the half (13 points, 13 rebounds). The 17 boards are a postseason high for Duncan. Duncan’s career Playoff high is 25 boards in 2002 against the Lakers. He has recorded 12 double-doubles in 17 postseason games.
BLOCK PARTY: With two blocks, Duncan now has 45 blocks in The Finals, moving him ahead of Kevin McHale (44) for fifth most in Finals history.
BIG SHOT ROB UP THE CHARTS: Robert Horry played in his 192nd career Playoff game. That’s fifth all-time on the Playoff list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (237), Scottie Pippen (208), Danny Ainge (193) and Karl Malone (193) … Horry also nailed two three-pointers and now has 40 three-pointers in Finals play, second only to Michael Jordan (42).
