Scott Skiles' hard-nosed approach with Eddy Curry

Scott Skiles recently pinpointed Eddy Curry as one of the members of the Bulls he believes is not using the most of his potential. Curry was picked by coaches and GM's around the league as being one of the players most likely to have a breakout season. His statistics have improved but he has left Bulls fans always wanting more. Apparently, Curry was also leaving Bulls management searching for more.

Some of the biggest complaints about Curry seem to revolve around his lack of effort, focus and conditioning. Skiles has made no secret that he will do whatever needs to be done to improve these things.

Skiles first step has been to call Curry out publicly for his lack of proper conditioning and keeping him after practice to work on his post moves and to work on his conditioning. He also made the rest of the team run laps because Curry forgot to get his ankles taped before practice. These moves are an almost military-like method of improving someone and also forcing them to be responsible for their own actions by showing how they affect the group.

By letting his man score or grab a rebound Curry hurts the team. Apparently, Curry wasn't grasping this concept and it had to be reduced to holding him accountable for other things like taping his ankle and punishing the team when he didn't to show them that everything he does on the court in games and practices effects the rest of the team, just like it would affect the rest of the troops in his regimen if he were in the military.

In his first game after the extra work after practice and the extra accountability Curry performed admirably against the Knicks in a 104-99 victory. Bulls' fans hope that this is a sign of arguably their most talented player as well as the franchise turning the corner. It will be interesting to see if Curry embraces the criticism and extra work or wilts and gives up. This may be the time to see exactly where the franchise is heading.
