OAKLAND, CA - The Golden State Warriors have re-signed
free agent guard/forward Calbert Cheaney to a contract, Executive Vice President
of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today. Per team policy, terms
of the agreement were not announced.
Warriors fans are not expected to be thrilled by this
signing, but as Mullin points out, Cheaney is useful as a teacher, to guide the
kiddies in their development as players.
"We are very happy that Calbert has decided to remain a member of our team," said
Mullin. "We've made a concerted effort to surround our young core of players with
solid, team-oriented veterans who can help in their development, provide leadership
and help us on the court, too. Calbert fits that description perfectly and is
a true professional in every sense of the word."
Cheaney, 33, appeared in 79 games with Golden State last season, averaging 7.6
points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26.2 minutes per contest. His .481 field
goal percentage would have ranked 21st in the NBA had he met the statistical minimums
to qualify. As a starter last season (seven games), the 11-year NBA veteran averaged
15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.86 steals in 42.1 minutes, while
shooting 64.6% from the field.
Originally drafted by the Washington Wizards with the sixth overall pick in the
1993 NBA Draft, Cheaney owns career averages of 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and
1.8 assists in 28.3 minutes over 728 regular-season games with Washington, Boston,
Denver, Utah and Golden State. Prior to originally signing with the Warriors as
a free agent on August 27, 2003, the Evansville, Indiana, native spent the 2002-03
season in Utah, where his .499 field goal percentage was tops among all starting
guards in the NBA.
Do the Warriors actually have enough young talent to justify
signing veterans like Cheaney and Derek Fisher? While spending a sizable chunk
of change on re-signing Adonal Foyle, who has yet to put together an impressive
season?
