By InsideHoops.com | July 12, 2005
Event: Broward 5A's International Training Basketball Camp.
Run by: Pascal Levy (Director), Bob Starkman (Instructor/Trainer)
When: The Broward 5A's training camp took place in late June.
Location: Broward Community College in Coconut Creek, Florida.
The first time camp was a success while being a great experience for Bob Starkman and one of his assistants, Jay McCormick. The camp ran from Monday-Thursday, with the first day focusing on individual workouts and team drills, and the rest on team play.
The concept of the camp is unique in that they had American players trying to earn a job overseas, scrimmaging and doing individual drills with and against various French pros. This enabled the coaches to compare the players in meaningful fashion.
These are the players who stood out in the 2005 Broward 5a's international training camp:
Amara Sy: 6-8 235 2/3 winner of the 2004 Nike battlegrounds one-on-one tourney. Sy has a 7-5 wingspan. He won the MVP in the French Pro league All Star game. Plays for Clermont in France Pro A. Tremendous player, intense, defends very well, rebounds well at his position, physical, can go inside and outside (three-point range) with consistency. Definitely an NBA prospect. Teams should be looking to bring him in for their summer leagues. Has been shown some interest already. Great young man.
Sambou Traore: 6-7 228 3/4 Vichy/France Pro A, runs the floor well, can pull up for a jump-shot or go to the rim. Likes contact, defends well.
Pape Badiane: 6-10 215, 5 Cleveland State, Pro A Roanne/France, rebounds well and runs floor, soft touch, needs to get more physical, hard worker.
Nouha Diakite: 6-9 245 4/5 Louisville, Vichy/Pro A France, good inside player, runs floor well, blocks shots.
Raphael Desroses: 6-4 235, 2/3 Garden City CC, Angers/France Pro B, shoots the ball well, talented player, good size (physical)
Dani Hazut: 6-3 210 2 College of Southern Idaho. Originally from Israel, smart player, can play either guard spot Sees the court well, good handle, can pull up and hit the three. Has a basketball IQ.
Gerrick Morris: 6-10 230, 5 University of South Florida, played in England/Plymouth Raiders. Great shot-blocker (#3 in NCAA) and rebounds well. Has gotten more aggressive on the offensive end. Good work ethic.
Derrick Breland: 5-11 200 1/2 Fordham University, excellent player, can hit threes or use his quickness and strength to get to the basket, can make a team go. Defends well. Reminds some of Jameer Nelson (Magic). Will be a steal for any team.
Adrian Jackson: 5-11 170 1, Mountain State NAIA, honorable mention All American. Led his team to its first NAIA National Championship (04). A point guard from the 60's. Plays defense and passes first. Anyone around him gets better, can score if need be.
Jason Miles: 6-3 180, FAMU, combo guard, shoots the lights out on the basket from deep, biggest surprise at camp. Defends well and works all the time.
Greg Walker: 6-2 175 2, Lasalle College. Good shooter, plays both ends of the court. Needs to get a little more physical.
Adrian Jackson was one of the only players in camp to take several charges.
The camp was run by Pascal Levy from 5A'S agency in France. Head Instructor Bob Starkman, Broward Community College and Assistant Jay McCormick, Broward Community College. Overall a great success and will only get better next year.
